Do Not Make These Curriculum Mistakes!

Are you regretting your choices? Do you already feel that you've made a mistake? Choosing the right curriculum is one of the most important decisions when it comes to homeschooling high school. We at Let'sHomeschoolHighSchool.com make it our business to help high school homeschool families choose their best fit curriculum. If you're miserable and already feel that you've grabbed the wrong curriculum this year, don't just endure... rethink your decision - sooner rather than later!

  1. Pick a curriculum simply because you think it looks great. Choosing the right curriculum begins with knowing your student. You must have a good understanding of your child's learning styles and what teaching methods sync up with that style. If your student is a visual learner then an online homeschool curriculum might be the ticket. If they learn best with workbooks and writing, then you'll need to find a curriculum that maximizes on that style of learning.
  2. Randomly buying curriculum without making sure it's tried and proven. You can find great curriculum through recommendations and reviews from friends. I sure like reading reviews of people who have actually tried and used something before I actually buy it. I also scour the reviews for people that have similar needs/wants - that's the important part. This helps me get a feel for how it will work and if it will work for us. I can also ask for free samples of any curriculum before I buy it!
  3. Grab a curriculum because the neighbor used it and they went to Harvard. Choose curriculum that fits your family's lifestyle and your homeschool goals. Don't go with a curriculum just because someone else you know did it. Their situation is different from yours. It may be too much/too little for your students to handle, or it may be taught with a different methodology than what your children are used to. Find a curriculum that reflects your family's goals of homeschooling.
  4. Buy a big box curriculum, just because it's easier. If you can't find just one that fits your needs, mix up your curriculum. Most homeschoolers have found that in highschool it's very difficult to find one curriculum that works for all subjects. It's common for homeschoolers to use a different brand of curriculum for each subject; just align your resources to match your homeschool plan. It's all about meeting the needs of your student, and if it works then that's the best choice!

Don't delay - find a good fit as soon as possible!
