The Secret to Starting Homeschool Mid-Year

A lot of anxiety comes with starting anything new, and beginning to homeschool mid-year is no different. But, we are here to tell you that many families do this every year. Some are accidental homeschoolers, or ones that start homeschooling without having planned to homeschool. The reasons are different for each family, but all can begin homeschooling with just a few simple steps.

  • LEGALITIES. Check out your state's homeschooling laws and make sure your child is officially withdrawn from school. Make the switch when the semester ends. Statistics show that students do better when they transition during a break or the end of the semester/quarter. Make sure to get detailed information about where your child left off in his or her studies.
  • RESEARCH. Take time to research homeschooling, the methods, the curriculum, and your own child. It is vitally important to find out your child's strengths and weaknesses, learning style, and motivators. This information is what you'll use to purchase a curriculum and develop how you homeschool.
  • PLAN. Choose a homeschool curriculum and method of learning by using what you discovered about your child. Find a curriculum that matches his or her learning style and incorporate those things that motivate your student to learn. For example, if your child is a visual learner who enjoys technology then an online curriculum might be the key!
  • ORGANIZE a room or an area to make it conducive to learning. Having a regular place to study establishes a good habit of learning each day. You may also want to organize outings with local co-ops or use learning activities to enrich your student's studies.
  • SCHEDULE your homeschool according to your needs. Each homeschooling family must find a schedule that fits their lifestyle and their student's learning requirements. If you create a schedule that works for your individual family it will surely fit!
